Around 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, according to police.
Automobiles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, in some cases with swastikas, they stated in a release.
Police report they were alerted during the night on Wednesday, when a individual discovered that a vehicle in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the form of a swastika, they added.
Police then found numerous other marked vehicles and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report initial examinations show the substance was probably human bodily fluid.
"There is still no lead as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any physical harm in association with the incident," they stated.
Local authorities stated they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have requested to the public for details.
A senior official stated the incident made him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This event hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he stated on social media, recalling the death of nine victims by a shooter aiming at residents of immigrant origin in February 2020.
