The atmosphere at Lazio's home ground was anything but joyful this past Saturday. Lazio were trailing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Had their campaign coming unstitched, or had there never been a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? The club brought back Maurizio Sarri as manager in the summer transfer window, before he to later acknowledge that the board had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were about to receive for financial irregularities. Speculation that his departure was imminent were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "misled" him.
Lazio appeared equally disorganized during matches as behind the scenes, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but being defeated in the remaining opening fixtures, featuring the derby della Capitale. Throughout this period, it's been difficult to tell if progress is being made or imploding.
The Youngster's Unexpected Presence
A single player continued to smile through it. Matteo Cancellieri had not been expected to be at Lazio this year. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, his owning club were pushing for him to remain there a while longer. The registration embargo forced a rethink. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster without replacements.
He joined initially during Sarri's previous tenure, then a 20-year-old product of Verona's academy. He recorded 20 league appearances in Lazio colors in the 2022-23 season, all but one of those coming off the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended at the end of that season, later stated Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri would be a star but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Natural Fit
Perhaps the manager was still trying to identify the nature of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a flank player when he joined, Cancellieri yet was deployed for much of that season as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile as center forward. Across 63 games on loan at Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he scored seven times. Shoehorn
