Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Lives Lost and Large-Scale Displacement Confirmed

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, resulting in at least two people dead and displaced more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials reported that the massive storm triggered extensive flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Widespread Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In the town of Pandan, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching rooftop levels and residences being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued fourteen people stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him and four relatives.”

By Monday, officials announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim on the island and another killed when her house collapsed on Samar island.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a severe tropical storm on Monday morning as it crossed the Philippines’ largest island, home to the national capital.

According to the state weather service, the storm’s sustained wind speed dropped from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts peaked at more than 275 km/h.

The storm system is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The country’s emergency management agency stated efforts were ongoing to assess damage to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately thousands of shelters have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, which killed at least 224 people with another 135 missing prior to advancing toward Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing were halted on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased by more than 100% in the past twenty years.

Global assessments indicate that intense storms cause approximately US$3.5 million in losses to the country annually.

The Philippine president declared an emergency declaration on Thursday because of the severe damage from the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from Fung-wong.
