The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. The same goes for board games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and typically start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is an essential concession within the realm of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some puzzle games scraped into niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

These are often small games, but the art in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these include experiences without proper classification during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
