Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.

We present a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. The 2025 indie hit recently had its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. At first glance, it may seem like conventional body horror, but inside Together lies a profound meditation about the ways we decide to love our partners.

An Introductory Film Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the two stars contribute a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the cliches cease. Together transforms into as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and Millie and Tim tumble into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and finally finding a way out, a mysterious influence starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, interspersing bits of hallucinatory nightmares, gross (but never too gross) physical transformations, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). Shanks skillfully blends these components seamlessly and wraps them up in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray countless layers to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and feeling of intimacy is suffering due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and isolated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his social circle. He dreads the idea of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for mobility.

The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the kind of problems that are inherent in most partnerships over a long period. Fundamentally, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the paranormal elements in Together represent these concerns of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments offer a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the horror and the drama serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about enmeshed dynamics. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a powerful case for staying single. Conversely, certain partners experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the conclusion plant feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you identify in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply glance toward your significant other and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
